Households in Indiana who receive payments from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and who have yet to collect benefits can expect to do so over the next three days.

In Indiana, food stamps are sent out based on the first letter of a SNAP recipient's last name. Benefits are distributed from the fifth of the month to the 23rd of the month on odd days.

Recipients with last names A through S should have already collected their SNAP benefits by Sunday. Households whose last names start with T, U, and V will receive their benefits on Tuesday, and households with last names W, X, Y, and Z should collect their benefits on Thursday.

Approximately 617,600 people, or 9% of the population, receive food stamps in Indiana. The average payment per household member per month is $182.

A household of one can receive a maximum amount of $291, a household of five can receive a maximum of $1,155, and a household of eight can receive a maximum of $1,751. For each additional person, a household can receive a maximum of $219. These amounts are based on the recent cost-of-living adjustments for 2023-24.

The benefits are loaded into a prepaid electronic benefits transfer card each month, which in Indiana is called the Hoosier Works Card. It works like a debit card and can be used at grocery stores, farmers markets, and some online retailers.

The money is intended for purchasing groceries, snacks, fresh food, seeds, and plants. SNAP benefits cannot be used to purchase nonfood household items, tobacco products, alcohol, pet food, or prepared foods.
