


Beneficiaries enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in Maine will begin to see their monthly food stamps in as soon as four days.
The food stamps program in the state, which offers assistance to low-income individuals with paying for groceries and food, delivers monthly benefits from Aug. 10 through Aug. 14 this month. When a recipient receives their payment depends on their date of birth.

The average amount a beneficiary will receive is also dependent on a variety of factors, but the average monthly benefit in the state per household is $168. The state says that approximately 161,800 people, or roughly 12% of the population, receive SNAP benefits.
Recipients born on days ending in 0 or 9 will get their benefits on Aug. 10, while those born on days ending in 1 or 8 will see their benefits on Aug. 11, those born on days ending in 2 or 3 getting their benefits on Aug. 12, those born on days ending in 4 or 7 receiving their benefits on Aug. 13, and those born on days ending in 5 or 6 seeing their monthly benefits on Aug. 14.
Benefits are placed on electronic benefit transfer cards for use at eligible stores.

In the Pine Tree State, benefits can be used for groceries along with seeds, but they may not be used for prepared meals. Additional information on eligible items for the food stamp program can be found on the state's website.
Those applying for food stamps in Maine may not be making more than a certain income, depending on the size of their household. The range of maximum annual income is $26,973 for a household of one to $65,009 for a household of five.
