Indiana will finish sending payments from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for September in five days, distributing food stamps to qualified low-income families.

SNAP is sent out in Indiana monthly, from the 3rd to the 23rd, according to the 2023 federal schedule. Recipients usually see their SNAP benefits reloaded on the same day each month, with the date depending on the first letter of the client's last name.

Several requirements must be met to qualify for food stamps, depending on the household and income threshold. In Indiana, the maximum payment for a household of one is $281, and the maximum payment is $1,691 for a household of eight, according to the state Family and Social Services Administration. After eight, SNAP adds $211 for each additional member.

In Indiana, the average payment per household member per month is $182. About 617,600 people, or 9% of the population, receive food stamps, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Benefits are loaded on an electronic benefits transfer card, known as the Hoosier Works card in Indiana. The date recipients will see their payments depends on the first three letters of their last name. SNAP can be used to buy grocery items, such as meat and poultry products, bread and cereal, and seeds for growing food. SNAP cannot be used to purchase alcohol, cleaning supplies, or pet food.
