All recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in Virginia will have their benefits for the month of July distributed in just four days.

SNAP benefits, or food stamps, are distributed from the first through the seventh of every month, with distribution being determined by the last digit of a recipient's case number.

Food stamp recipients with a case number that ends in 0-3 will see their benefits on July 1, those with a case number ending in 4-5 will see their benefits on July 4, and those with a case number ending in 6-9 will see their benefits July 7.

In Virginia, the average benefit payment per household member is $181, with about 9% of the state's population receiving assistance paying for food via SNAP. The number of recipients of SNAP in Virginia is approximately 794,600.

SNAP benefits can be used for "food or food products meant to be eaten by people," along with seeds and food-producing plants, among other things, per the state.

Benefits are given on an electronic benefit transfer card, or Virginia EBT, allowing beneficiaries to purchase eligible items at stores.

Food stamp benefits cannot be used for non-food items, alcohol, tobacco, medicines, gardening items, cleaning or paper products, pet food, or prepared hot foods.

The maximum annual income permitted to be eligible for SNAP in Virginia depends on household size. For a household of one, the maximum monthly income is $2,265, and for a household of five, the maximum monthly income is $5,412.
