July's final Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program payment worth up to $1,691 will be sent out in Maryland in four days.

SNAP benefits, also known as food stamps, are sent out from the 4th to the 23rd of every month, according to the state's benefits schedule.

The maximum amount that can be sent in Maryland is $740 for a household of three and $1,691 for a household of eight. The program adds up to $211 for each additional member past eight.

The average payment per household member for each month is $180, and almost 800,000 people receive food stamps in the state.

Recipients can use SNAP benefits “for food and for plants and seeds to grow food for your household to eat,” according to the state. Benefits are given on an electronic benefit transfer card, called the Independence Card, allowing beneficiaries to purchase eligible items at stores. Benefits cannot be used for nonfood items, alcohol, medicines, tobacco, or “hot foods that are ready to eat.”

The day that food stamps are available on the Independence Card depends on the first three letters of the recipient’s last name.
