Delaware residents who receive financial support from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will be issued their final payments for September in three days.

SNAP, or food stamps, is distributed monthly to qualified low-income families and recipients usually see their SNAP benefits reloaded on the same day each month. In the First State, SNAP is sent out to households from the 3rd to the 23rd, according to the 2023 federal schedule, and the payout date is determined by the first letter of a recipient's last name.

The average payment per household member per month is $175. Single-person households receive $281 as a maximum benefit, while eight-member households can collect up to $1,691. An additional $211 is added for each household member over eight.

A household's gross monthly income cannot exceed 200% of the federal poverty level. A single-person household cannot make more than $2,266 monthly, while an eight-person household cannot make more than $7,772. For each additional person after eight, the program adds $788 to the gross monthly income limit.

SNAP can be used to buy grocery items, such as meat and poultry products, bread and cereal, and seeds for growing food. SNAP cannot be used to purchase alcohol, cleaning supplies, or pet food.

Around 118,800 people, or 12% of Delaware's population, receive food stamps in the state.
