Alabama is slated to send September payments to residents participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program on Monday.

SNAP, or food stamps, is distributed to low-income families and individuals who qualify for federal assistance to purchase certain grocery items. Benefits in Alabama are sent out from the 4th through the 23rd of the month, according to the 2023 schedule.

Starting Sept. 4, recipients can expect to get their benefits based on the last two digits of their case number. For example, if a recipient's case number ends in 00-04, benefits are available on the 4th of the month. Case numbers ending in 05-09 will see their payments on the 5th of the month. Final payments are slated for the 23rd of the month, when those with case numbers ending in 95-99 will receive their benefits.

Most families in Alabama with a gross income up to 130% of the federal poverty level will qualify for SNAP. The amount a beneficiary receives depends on a person's income and household size. The average benefit payment per household member in Alabama is $183. For a household of one person, the maximum benefit is $281, and a household of five could see a maximum monthly benefit of $1,116.

For a household of one, the maximum annual income is $18,954, and for a household of five, the maximum annual income is $45,682.

Around 761,100 people in Alabama, or roughly 15% of the state's population, receive assistance from SNAP, according to 2022 data from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
