With August winding down, there are residents in 19 states and territories who should expect to see their food stamp benefits by this Sunday.
The funds, worth up to $1,751 for a household of eight, will be uploaded to an Electronic Benefits Transfer card, which functions as a debit card and can be used at any supermarket or grocery store that accepts the benefits. To qualify for SNAP, a household income must be at or below 130% of the poverty line — $2,072 per month or $32,328 per year. Benefits are distributed over a one-year period.
States do not distribute the funds all in one day, as some do it over the course of the month.
An individual recipient is eligible to receive a monthly allotment of $291.
Each state, district, and territory manages and distributes the benefits differently. Some of them make payments depending on a claimant’s given number, and others pay them out according to the first letter of the claimant’s last name.
