A Florida prisoner who brutally stabbed a woman to death in 1986 was executed on Wednesday by way of lethal injection.

Darryl Barwick, 56, was declared dead at approximately 6:14 p.m. at Florida State Prison in Radford after officials administered a lethal drug mix at 6:02 p.m., according to a report.

The cocktail consisted of a sedative, paralytic, and drug to stop his heart, the report noted.

"It's time to apologize to the victim’s family, to my family. I can't explain why I did what I did," Barwick said prior to his death.

"And another thing I would like to say, the state of Florida needs to show some kind of compassion and kindness for each other with so many kids in prison."

Only his face was visible to onlookers, as his body had been covered with a sheet by the execution team, with the exception of his left arm holding the intravenous lines, according to the report.

Barwick's eyes were open throughout the entire procedure, the report noted.

He breathed heavily for a short while, and his arm twitched after he was administered the drug cocktail.

Barwick was convicted in the gruesome murder of Rebecca Wendt, whom he stabbed to death on March 31, 1996, in her Panama City apartment, months after he was released from prison, where he served a sentence for rape.

He had followed Wendt back to her residence after watching her sunbathe with the intention of robbing her, but when she fought back, Barwick stabbed her at least 37 times.

When authorities arrived on the scene, the victim's bathing suit looked as if someone attempted to remove it, but no evidence of sexual assault was present.

Medical examiners, however, did report they discovered semen on a blanket where her corpse was found.

Barwick was connected to the case via his confession, footprints outside the residence, the semen stain, and a witness who watched him approach the apartment.

He was convicted of first-degree murder, armed burglary, attempted sexual battery, and armed robbery that November and sentenced to death two months later.

"This is a case where there has never been a doubt about the defendant’s guilt," 14th Judicial Circuit State Attorney Larry Basford said in a statement.

"Not one, but two juries found the defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and recommended that he be sentenced to death. Unfortunately, it took 37 years from the time of the crime for that punishment to be carried out in this case. We appreciate the tireless efforts of the Attorney General’s Office and Governor DeSantis' office to obtain justice for the victim and her family."
