


A Florida homeowner shot a would-be intruder dead outside his home on Thursday after the intruder attempted to break in, authorities said.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight in Volusia County, according to the Port Orange Police Department.

At "approximately 0005 hours (12:05 AM), The Port Orange Police Department responded to the 5900 block of Pelham Dr. reference an active burglary to an occupied dwelling," a police statement read.
"During this incident, the homeowner fatally shot the intruder, as that person was forcibly attempting to enter the residence."
It is believed the homeowner acted in self-defense, but an investigation is ongoing, according to police.

Florida has enacted strong "Stand Your Ground" legislation.
If someone is in his or her home or occupied vehicle, they maintain the right to "stand their ground" and use or threaten to use deadly force if there is a reasonable belief that such force is necessary to stop death, severe bodily harm, or an action that would constitute a forcible felony.
