Florida Republican Party Chairman Christian Ziegler is reportedly invoking former President Donald Trump's silence as a defense as he refuses to step down from his position during an investigation into Ziegler for alleged sexual battery.

Several prominent Sunshine State GOP leaders have called for him to step down as party leader, but Ziegler has pointed to the former president's lack of comment on the matter as a form of support, according to a report from the Messenger.

Lee County GOP Chairman Michael Thompson told the outlet that Ziegler invoked the former president when Thompson told him to step down, allegedly saying, "You don’t call on him to resign, but you want me to step down," in reference to sexual assault allegations made against Trump.

Thompson claims he responded by saying the accusations against Trump were not made while he was in power, whereas the allegations against Ziegler were while he was party chairman.

Ziegler has maintained his innocence and claims the investigation will not produce any charges, but the party is reportedly meeting on Dec. 17 in Orlando to decide the fate of Ziegler as party chairman.

The embattled party chairman has been called on to resign by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), state Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, state House Speaker Paul Renner, Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), and other statewide GOP leaders. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) told the outlet he would leave Ziegler's fate to the state party leadership.

Trump has previously expressed his support for Ziegler, celebrating his win as state party chairman in February as a "big" victory and said he would be a "great chairman."
