A Florida sheriff's deputy was rushed to the hospital Sunday after he was struck by lightning.

The incident occurred while the Walton County Sheriff's deputy was driving his patrol vehicle south on 331 S near Sherwood Drive, according to a release from the sheriff's office.

"The deputy was transported to Sacred Heart by Walton County Fire Rescue, Florida, and his vehicle was inoperable after the strike fried his electrical system," the release read.


"He is awake and conscious and is expected to be okay."

Along with the deputy, emergency officials responded to a local water rescue around 11:45 a.m. following reports that a woman had been struck by lightning while in the water, authorities said.

"CPR was performed by bystanders," the release noted, and the patient was transported by Walton Air Rescue, Florida, to receive medical attention.

"Storms can be unpredictable and come up quickly," the release read. "Please use your best judgment and get to a safe area when clouds roll in."
