Several Qantas Airline flights have been delayed over the last few weeks due to SpaceX rocket activity.
Some flights between Johannesburg, South Africa, and Sydney, Australia, have been delayed as long as six hours after receiving a warning from the U.S. government “regarding the re-entry of SpaceX rockets over an extensive area of the Southern Indian Ocean.”
Ben Holland, head of Qantas’s operations center, said the Australian airline had been given little advance notice of where the rockets would reenter or where debris might fall, causing the fights to be delayed.
“While we try to make any changes to our schedule in advance, the timing of recent launches have moved around at late notice, which has meant we’ve had to delay some flights just prior to departure,” Holland said. “Our teams notify customers of changes to their flight as soon as we know it will be impacted.”
He added, “We’re in contact with SpaceX to see if they can refine the areas and time windows for the rocket re-entries to minimize future disruption to our passengers on the route.”
