Washington, D.C., health officials have confirmed the first measles case in the nation’s capital and identified several exposure sites including Union Station and Adams Morgan.

Officials shared three locations where residents may have been exposed to the measles virus.

People may have been exposed on March 19 at the Amtrak Northeast Regional 175 Train Southbound between 7:30 p.m. and 1:30 a.m., as well as at the Amtrak Concourse at Union Station between 11 p.m. and 1:30 a.m.

The MedStar Urgent Care in Adams Morgan was another exposure site on March 22 between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Health officials are advising those who may have been exposed to contact their healthcare providers or the D.C. Health hotline for further guidance.

Earlier this month, there was public concern over an unconfirmed measles case with exposure sites at Washington Dulles International Airport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and other locations in Maryland and Virginia.

A U.N. agency warned that the Americas are at risk of breaking their 25-year eliminated status of measles earlier this month following an outbreak in Texas.

There have been 309 reported cases in Texas this year, surpassing the nationwide total in 2024.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the 2025 measles outbreak is far worse than the 2019 outbreak despite the vaccination rate increasing from last year.

“Measles is back, and it’s a wake-up call,” Dr. Hans Henri P. Kluge, the World Health Organization’s regional director for Europe, said in a statement. “Without high vaccination rates, there is no health security. As we shape our new regional health strategy for Europe and central Asia, we cannot afford to lose ground. Every country must step up efforts to reach under-vaccinated communities.”

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has a track record of skepticism of vaccines, is pushing for the public to adopt better diets, fish oil, and vitamin A in combating the illness.

Measles is highly contagious and can spread through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes.

Those exposed should watch for symptoms up to 21 days after exposure.
