Fetterman slams ‘Democratic vultures’ pouncing on Biden after nightmare debate - Washington Examiner

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) criticized the “Democratic vultures on [President Joe Biden’s] shoulders” who are panicking about Biden’s debate performance after the president appeared to lack mental sharpness.
Fetterman dismissed a performance in which Biden appeared to prove his critics right with his lack of mental acuity and pointed back to his own nightmarish debate performance in 2022.
“I refuse to join the Democratic vultures on Biden’s shoulder after the debate,” Fetterman posted on X with a screenshot of a Politico article titled “‘WTF’: Panicked Dems start looking for alternatives to Biden.”
“No one knows more than me that a rough debate is not the sum total of the person and their record,” the senator said.
The Pennsylvania Democrat continued, saying: “Morning-after thermonuclear beat downs from my race from the debate and polling geniuses like 538 predicted l’d lose by 2. And what happened? The only seat to flip and won by a historic margin (+5). Chill the f*** out.”
Fetterman debated Republican candidate Mehmet Oz in October 2022 and didn’t deliver an ideal performance. At one point, when answering a question about energy, Fetterman failed to deliver a contrast between him and Oz on fracking, saying, “I do support fracking and I don’t, I don’t … I support fracking and I stand and I do support fracking.”
Despite the struggles and repeated calls by Republicans that Fetterman was not healthy enough to be a senator, the former lieutenant governor beat Oz easily, besting the TV celebrity by nearly 5 percentage points.

Others such as Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) are backing Biden as well, saying the conversations about replacing him, which are widespread, are “unhelpful.” Fetterman has a personal connection to Biden: Biden is from Scranton, Pennsylvania.
The next presidential debate will held by ABC on Sept. 10.
