NextImg:Federal workers who don't email weekly achievements will be fired: Musk

Elon Musk, the head of President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, installed new accountability measures for federal workers.

On Saturday, Musk announced that all employees who work at federal bureaucracies will be required to send a weekly report to management detailing the work they completed during the previous seven days. Failure to do so, Musk said, would result in a def-facto firing of sorts.

WHAT IS DOGE? WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF GOVERNMENT EFFICIENCY

“Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week,” the DOGE leader said in a post to X. “Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.”

The new order will affect roughly three million employees across the country who work for the federal government.

Musk’s directive comes after Trump called on the DOGE leader to “get more aggressive” in a social media post earlier on Saturday.

“ELON IS DOING A GREAT JOB, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HIM GET MORE AGGRESSIVE. REMEMBER, WE HAVE A COUNTRY TO SAVE, BUT ULTIMATELY, TO MAKE GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE,” Trump said.

Musk has already helped lead successful efforts pushing thousands of federal employees to voluntarily resign through the Trump administration’s “buyout” initiative. According to comments made by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt last week, 77,000 federal employees have accepted the deferred resignation plan, which allows them to leave their jobs but be paid through the end of September.

There is not an official tally of how many federal employees have been fired due to DOGE’s effort to trim the size of the bureaucracy.

Reports widely vary over how many federal employees have been laid off. New York Magazine put the estimate at around 30,0000, while USA Today reported the number could surpass 100,000.
