NextImg:FDR might have been given cocaine in the White House to treat one of his several illnesses

The White House made headlines earlier this week when cocaine was found in the West Wing over the July 4 holiday weekend.

The discovery raised questions about security when the White House was unable to determine where the cocaine came from, or who it belonged to. Adding to the furor were rampant inquiries about whether the narcotic might belong to Hunter Biden, the president's son, who has a history of substance abuse and has spent increasingly large amounts of time with and around his father in recent months.

However, this was not the first time the drug was reportedly used in the presidential residence.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt was perhaps the most famous commander in chief to have used cocaine, though he probably wasn't a recreational user, according to the Guardian. FDR was known for having multiple health complications, among them, chronic sinus infections — a condition that was treated with small doses of cocaine before the widespread adoption of antibiotics.

Ross McIntire, the White House physician at the time, administered the drug to the ailing president on multiple occasions, even on December 7, 1941 — the date of the Pearl Harbor attack. Historian Steve Gillon stumbled upon this discovery while researching for his 2011 book Pearl Harbor: FDR Leads the Nation Into War.

“Cocaine was the drug of choice,” Gillon said, for treating nasal swelling, often preventing blood loss from the patient’s nose. Cotton swabs were used to apply the drug, a procedure that would ideally shrink and numb the nasal tissue before draining the built-up sinus fluid.

“It was nothing unusual, it was common practice, and it wasn’t illegal,” said Gillon.

The historian noted it’s unclear whether exposure to cocaine altered FDR’s personality or decision-making, or even if the president knew what the doctor was giving him. Back then, doctors did not willingly tell patients they were receiving cocaine.

In addition to FDR, President John F. Kennedy allegedly smoked marijuana in the White House and was said to have been given amphetamine for his chronic back pain, according to the Washington Post and the Daily Mail. These reports also identified alleged drug use by celebrities during the Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and Barack Obama administrations.

It was reported on Tuesday a white powder was discovered in the White House over the weekend, after which lab tests confirmed the substance was indeed cocaine, the Secret Service said Wednesday. Since then, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre largely dodged reporters' questions while saying the Secret Service is actively looking into it.

Hunter Biden was the focus of the controversy as he has had a long history of drug abuse. He was reportedly in the White House last Friday before departing for a weekend trip to Camp David.
