The Federal Communications Commission has reinstated complaints against three news outlets after they were scrapped in the waning days of the Biden administration.

Brendan Carr, the new Republican head of the agency, has brought back cases against CBS, ABC, and NBC related to last fall’s presidential election — though a complaint against Fox will be allowed to lapse.

Previous FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, a Democrat, dismissed all four complaints last week, only to see most of them reinstated soon after she left.

The CBS case relates to complaints that the network’s 60 Minutes edited an interview with Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, with the Center for American Rights accusing CBS of “significant and intentional news distortion” designed to aid her campaign.

The ABC complaint stems from the one debate Harris had with President Donald Trump, arguing that moderators favored the Democrat while choosing to aggressively fact-check Trump.

The NBC case dates to an episode of Saturday Night Live that aired the weekend before Election Day, during which Harris made an appearance but Trump was not given the opportunity. Carr complained at the time that NBC had broken FCC rules.

The now-dormant Fox complaint was only tangentially related to the 2024 election, as the Media and Democracy Project argued that Fox News owners Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch lacked the “character” to hold a broadcast license for its Philadelphia affiliate, according to Deadline. It will not be brought back.

Carr has spoken out in favor of Trump since becoming a member of the FCC in 2017, saying earlier this week that the new president left “the swamp” in “shock and awe” after Trump announced he was uprooting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
