Dr. Anthony Fauci, the public face of the federal COVID-19 response under the Trump and Biden administrations, will be joining the faculty of Georgetown University on July 1.

"Dr. Fauci has embodied the Jesuit value of being in service to others throughout his career, and we are grateful to have his expertise, strong leadership, and commitment to guiding the next generation of leaders to meet the pressing issues of our time," said Georgetown President John DeGioia.

Fauci started working for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in 1968 and served as the agency director for 38 years. Fauci officially retired from government service in December, as House Republicans prepared investigations into the origins of COVID-19.

The House Oversight Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic is still investigating Fauci's role in the management of the federal response to COVID-19, including as part of its probe into whether there was a cover-up of the lab leak origin theory for SARs-CoV-2.

Fauci has been awarded the university's highest rank of distinguished university professor and will join the Division of Infectious Diseases at Georgetown's School of Medicine. He also has an appointment at the School of Public Policy.

When asked why he has decided to go into academia in an interview for the university, Fauci said that he still feels he has more to offer society.

"I could do more experiments in the lab and have my lab going, but given what I’ve been through, I think what I have to offer is experience and inspiration to the younger generation of students," said Fauci.

Having been raised Catholic and educated at a Jesuit institution, Fauci said that joining the faculty at Georgetown was "kind of a no-brainer."

"This is a natural extension of my scientific, clinical, and public health career, which was initially grounded from my high school and college days where I was exposed to intellectual rigor, integrity, and service-mindedness of Jesuit institutions," said Fauci.

Fauci's wife earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees at the university. The Faucis were also married at the school's Dahlgren Chapel, and their daughters were born at Georgetown Hospital.
