Being a soft-on-crime district attorney backed by liberal billionaire George Soros means prioritizing criminals over the victims of crimes. Sadly, that attitude even applies to child sex crimes.

Steve Descano, the Soros-backed Fairfax County Commonwealth’s attorney, is facing pushback from prosecutors on his team over how his policies have hamstrung them in child sex abuse cases. According to emails from those attorneys, the lack of support from “leadership” and Descano’s policies have emboldened defense attorneys to refuse any plea deals for child sex crimes that aren’t misdemeanors.

Defense attorneys are also shopping for specific judges for sex crime cases, knowing that Descano’s policy does not allow prosecutors to appeal “violent/sexual assault bond to the Court of Appeals.” One attorney said that Descano’s office “does not value protecting children who have been raped” and requested to be transferred to another office. Another said that public defenders “have unfettered access to our leadership, but leadership will not meet with us.”

This isn’t the first time that sex crimes have been an issue in Descano’s office. In April 2022, the Washington Free Beacon wrote about the mass departures from his office, leaving inexperienced prosecutors to handle serious crimes. This resulted in a soft plea deal that, according to a Fairfax County judge, led to a victim being molested twice more by a criminal after the first incident.

Crime actually ticked downward between 2020 to 2021 in Fairfax County (although it was still above pre-2020 levels), and so the 2020 crime surge is often tied to the pandemic as much as it is the atmosphere of lawlessness promoted by Democratic politicians and the elections of soft-on-crime prosecutors. But the truth is that from 2021 to 2022 crime rose again. Fairfax County has had to disband several specialty law enforcement units thanks to police departures. Coupled with the departures from Descano’s office and his soft-on-crime policies, it all makes for a combination that has led to disastrous results.

Fairfax County is only one of many such counties and cities that discovered that a weak district attorney who prioritizes criminals over victims will only embolden criminals. Los Angeles County, Philadelphia, New York City, and others have all gone down this same path and seen the same results. Whether or not they learn their lesson will become apparent the next time voters head to the polls.
