Former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas is entering the policy field following a loss in the 2023 Chicago mayoral election.

Vallas will join the Illinois Policy Institute as a policy adviser, the organization announced on Monday. Vallas will "lend his extensive expertise" on education, public safety, and fiscal policy.

The former candidate said in a statement that his "life's work" has been dedicated to identifying policies that "lift people up and bring stability to our city’s finances."

"Right now, the city of Chicago is at a breaking point. Our public agencies are about to fall off a fiscal cliff, the kids in our public schools are falling behind after COVID-19 lockdowns exacerbated learning struggles, our economy is lagging, and businesses are unable to operate in a high-crime, high-tax and high-regulation environment," Vallas said.

"I will never be someone who sits idly by and complains about these problems," he continued. "I am always going to work to make things better. That’s why I could think of no one better to partner with than the strongest government watchdog in the state —the Illinois Policy Institute."

Illinois Policy Institute President and CEO Matt Paprocki said the organization is "thrilled" to add Vallas to the team, citing his mayoral campaign, which focused mainly on improving the city's economy and crime response.

“Paul’s 2023 mayoral campaign united Chicagoans across the city behind commonsense reforms that will get our beloved city of Chicago back on track," Vallas said. "Paul’s public leadership is nationally renowned, and he has a track record as a reform-minded problem solver."

Vallas lost to Brandon Johnson during the April runoff election after both men defeated former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot in the general election in February.

Johnson ran a campaign on more liberal policies compared to Vallas, who presented a centrist platform. He focused on a comprehensive approach to public safety, including investing in affordable housing, education, and youth empowerment programs.
