Former United States Women's National Team captain Carli Lloyd chastised the USWNT and questioned the mentality of its players Tuesday following a 0-0 draw against Portugal in the FIFA Women's World Cup.

"Portugal played to win, and they almost did," the two-time FIFA Women's World Cup winner told the crew of Fox Soccer during post-game analysis.

Lloyd had previously spoken out about how winning no longer appears to be a top priority for the USWNT amid off-field concerns, including pushes for equal pay and LGBT rights.

"It started to shift post-2020," Lloyd said. "I think there's just a lot of off-the-field things that are happening, and, you know, you never want to take anything for granted.

"You put on that jersey and you want to give it everything you have for the people that came before you, for the people that are going to come after you, and I'm just not seeing that passion. I'm just seeing a very lackluster, uninspiring, taking it for granted, where winning and training and doing all that you can to be the best possible individual player is not happening."

The two-time FIFA Women's Player of the Year was asked if fame, money, and appearances have gotten in the way of winning, and she did not shoot that notion down.

"We saw before the game, the dancing," she said. "There's a difference between confidence and arrogance, and I think that that's a fine line of where is the direction going with that.

"So, it's OK to be confident, but you never want to cross that line of being arrogant, and this is exactly what can come and bite you."

USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski called Lloyd's comments after the game "insane."

The players "put everything they could in preparation for this tournament and every game that they go into," Andonovski said. "So, to question the mentality of this team, to question the willingness to win, to compete, I think that's insane."
