NEW YORK CITY — Estonia embarked on the United Nations General Assembly’s High-Level Week by demanding an emergency meeting of the Security Council to respond to Russia’s repeated incursions into its and other Baltic states’ airspace.

Speaking on Monday outside the U.N. Security Council’s chamber, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna underscored his request ahead of a panel meeting to discuss threats to international peace and security.

Tsahkna, speaking English, told reporters that Russian airplanes “penetrating deep” inside Estonia without permission for 12 minutes last Friday was a “dangerous escalation” amid Russia’s war with Ukraine.

“It was the fourth violation of Estonian airspace by Russia this year,” he said. “We are here today because this incident concerns not only Estonia, but the entire international community. This outrageous violation of the territorial integrity of Estonia was preceded by Russian drones violating the airspace of Poland and Romania.”

Conceding Russia is a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council with veto power, Tsahkna, nevertheless, criticized Russia for its “reckless actions,” contending they were “a breach of international law” but also that they brought “the entire region closer to conflict than at any time in recent years.”

“Such provocation is profoundly disrespectful towards the collective and tireless efforts of the international community to bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war and to restore peace and stability,” he said. “We also use this occasion to, yet again, call on the Russian Federation to cease without delaying its war of aggression against Ukraine and to abide by the obligations enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.”

Tsahkna added that South Korea, which currently holds the presidency of the U.N. Security Council, had already agreed to convene the meeting.

Tsahkna addressed the news media at the U.N. Security Council stakeout alongside counterparts from around the world, including Radek Sikorski, Poland’s deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs.

The Washington Examiner asked Sikorski whether Poland was concerned by the U.S. response to Russia’s incursions so far, including a social media post in which President Donald Trump asked, “What’s with Russia violating Poland’s airspace with drones? Here we go!”

“Our president, Karol Nawrocki, has a special relationship with President Trump. He’ll be here today and tomorrow, and we hope that he will persuade President Trump how urgent this is,” Sikorski said.

Trump was asked last weekend at the White House whether he would help defend Estonia, Poland, and other Baltic states from Russia if Putin kept invading their airspace.

TRUMP RETURNS TO UN IN STRONGER POSITION BUT WITH GREATER CHALLENGES

“I will,” he said.

When asked if he had been briefed on Estonia, Trump said, “We don’t like it.”
