NextImg:Eric Adams slashes New York City budget yet again as cost of immigration crisis rises

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a budget cut of 5% across all city agencies on Saturday due to the rising cost of the immigration crisis unfolding there.

Adams said the cut will "reduce the cost of caring for the asylum seekers" that have recently arrived in the city. This is the third budget cut the mayor has called for, asking every agency to reduce their spending by 5% for the November budget, then again for the January budget, and finally for the April budget.

“We are in the middle of a humanitarian crisis involving asylum seekers, a crisis that will cost our city $12 billion over three fiscal years,” Adams said. “While our compassion is limitless, our resources are not.”

The New York City mayor has received $1.5 billion in aid. After receiving the funds, Adams still predicted the sudden increase in population would "destroy New York City."

"New Yorkers are angry and frustrated and they're right to be. I am too. I want to be clear these tough decisions are a direct result of inactions in Washington and in Albany," Adams went on. "But the die is not yet cast, we can still avoid these cuts if Washington and Albany do their part by paying their fair share and coming up with a decompression strategy that reduces the pressure on New York City so we are not forced to manage this crisis almost entirely on our own."

Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) said Tuesday that 35,000 immigrants have been bused to Democratic sanctuary cities, with 13,300 to New York City, the highest number among the six municipalities. Additionally, Abbott has bused immigrants to Denver, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles.

The immigrants that Abbott has transported represent less than 2% of the estimated 2 million that have entered the border and been released into the country's other interior states.

The most recent report from Operation Lone Star, the multi-agency program committed to combating illegal crossings at the Texas border, came out on Friday, revealing over 427,600 illegal immigrant apprehensions have occurred since March 2021.
