New York City Mayor Eric Adams criticized his 2025 opponents for leaving the city with the election roughly 100 days away.
Adams won office as a Democratic candidate, but opted to run for reelection as an independent while still identifying with the Democratic Party.

“I’m told my opponents are leaving town either to celebrate winning half an election or maybe writing another book on failed leadership,” Adams said.
Adams referenced his opponents, Zohran Mamdani, who left for Uganda mid-campaign, and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who penned the book “American Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic.”
“I can think of many places I’d go to get away from ya’ll. Ankora, Istanbul, or Zero Bond,” Adams said. “But I realized I’m not a wannabe mayor, I’m the actual mayor. I can’t just get up and leave.”
Adams has made international trips during his mayoral term. Adams traveled to Italy, Mexico, Ecuador, and Colombia just last year. The mayor implied his international travel is on hold until the election.
“If I’m gone, there won’t be an Eric Adams keeping things under control. Somebody has to keep us safe and get stuff done,” Adams went on. “So I’m staying. I was born here, spent my entire life here, so no matter what, Eric Adams isn’t going anywhere.”

Mamdani defended his Uganda trip by claiming he was going to celebrate his marriage with family and friends, as he was born there. The socialist candidate promised to return by the end of July.
Cuomo is running as an independent candidate after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani. Curtis Sliwa is the lone Republican candidate in the race.
