An elementary school math teacher in Connecticut has resigned after she allegedly "demonstrated a martial arts chokehold on three fifth-grade students in class," causing one to go unconscious, authorities said.

Stefanie Sanabria, who served as a math coach for Norwalk Public Schools prior to her resignation, allegedly carried out the chokeholds on Feb. 24 at Brookside Elementary School, according to a report.

"Ms. Sanabria has resigned her employment with the Norwalk Public Schools," a statement from the school district read. "The safety of our students is our first concern, and we immediately investigated the situation involving Ms. Sanabria when it occurred."

A motive as to why Sanabria performed the chokeholds has not yet been confirmed, but their implementation was "not part of instruction for the day," according to the district.

"With the assistance of the Norwalk Police Department, we determined that a teacher was demonstrating defensive holds to students, and a student fainted during that demonstration," the district said. "Fortunately, the student did not sustain any permanent injury."

An investigation was launched on the day of the alleged incident after the school district contacted police.

"One of the students lost consciousness as a result of Sanabria’s actions, and a nurse "immediately treated the child," police said.

Sanabria is charged with risk of injury to a minor, strangulation in the second degree, and reckless endangerment, according to the report, and she is held on a $20,000 bond.
