NextImg:Electric vehicles could be getting more expensive in Florida

Electric vehicles could become a more expensive investment in the Sunshine State if a proposed bill passes next year.

Republican State Sen. Ed Hooper has introduced a bill for the 2024 legislative session that would impose a $200 yearly registration fee for owners of electric vehicles in Florida.

The proposed bill, SB 28, would impose the yearly fee at $200 until 2029, when it would increase to $250 annually. In addition to the annual fee for electric vehicles, owners of plug-in hybrids would have to pay a $50 fee every year.

The fee would be a way to tax drivers of electric vehicles, similar to how drivers of gas-powered cars indirectly pay the state for using roads via the gas tax. The gas tax in Florida is currently 20.2 cents per gallon, according to the state.

A similar proposal passed in the Florida Senate earlier this year but was not taken up by the Florida House.

If Florida were to implement the annual registration fee for electric vehicles, it would join the more than 30 states that assert an annual fee to EV owners.

An annual registration fee was recently enacted in Texas, which requires electric vehicle owners to pay $200 a year as a way of making up for lost revenues because EV owners do not pay the gas tax.
