At least eight Palestinians have been killed after Israel carried out air and ground attacks across Jenin in the occupied West Bank on Monday.

The Israel Defense Forces launched at least 10 air attacks on the Palestinian militant stronghold. At least four of the people killed were shot in the chest and head, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

At least two dozen other Palestinians were reportedly injured in the attacks, some of whom are in critical condition.

About 150 armored vehicles and about 1,000 soldiers from "elite special forces and the military, as well as general intelligence, police, and border police" were part of the operation, Al Jazeera’s Jerusalem bureau chief said.

The Palestinian Authority Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attacks and said they targeted "defenseless civilians," a claim corroborated by the Qatari-based news outlet that spoke with residents hurt in the attacks.

The foreign ministry said it "calls for urgent international and American intervention to stop the aggression immediately, and calls on the International Criminal Court to break its silence and start holding the Israeli war criminals accountable."

Israel has claimed there are terrorist organizations operating within Jenin to "disrupt the stability and security of the region." However, Palestinians have accused Israel of escalating conflict and seeking revenge against Palestinians simply trying to stand up against oppression.

The United States has been criticized by those on both sides of the debate, for not doing enough to condemn Israel as violence grows in the West Bank and more and more Palestinians are killed, and then conversely, for not supporting Israel, one of its most crucial allies, enough when Palestinian militants strike back.
