Transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney has left the United States to spend some time in Peru, stating it was "a little sad" to have to leave the U.S. "to feel safe."

Mulvaney, a biological man who identifies as a woman, made the announcement on TikTok, where the influencer has over 10 million followers. Mulvaney received considerable backlash after being involved in a promotion for Bud Light that resulted in many conservatives abandoning the brand.

"I feel very safe here," Mulvaney said in a video. "It's a little sad I had to leave my country to feel safe, but that will get better eventually."

The backlash against Mulvaney and Bud Light began in early April after the company sent the influencer a beer can featuring Mulvaney's face to mark a full year of "girlhood." Conservatives urged the public to boycott the brand, and Bud Light sales have fallen sharply since, even to the point of hurting other brands in its parent company's portfolio.

In June, Mulvaney complained that the company had not offered support at the height of the backlash and said, "I've been scared to leave my house."

In a video filmed at Machu Picchu in Peru, Mulvaney said, "I have done shaman ceremonies" which were equivalent to "10 years worth of therapy." In another video, the influencer posed with a llama wearing a rainbow necklace.

Last month, Bud Light wrote on Twitter for the first time since it was forced to address the Mulvaney controversy. The beer company, owned by Anheuser-Busch, went dark on Twitter after April 14, when a tweet reading "TGIF" was met with upset online.

The attempt to return to Twitter has not been received well by other users on the platform, who have mocked the company for its failed campaign.
