The U.S. Air Force announced several unmanned aerial systems were detected over three bases it has used in the United Kingdom last week.
The drones, which ranged in sizes and configurations, were spotted last week between Wednesday and Friday “in the vicinity of and over” Royal Air Force Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Feltwell, according to U.S. Air Forces in Europe.
“To safeguard operational security, we do not discuss specific force protection measures, however we retain the right to protect our installations,” the statement from the Air Force said. “Our units continue to monitor the airspace and are working with host-nation authorities and mission partners to ensure the safety of base personnel, facilities and assets.”
The U.S. Air Force did not specify whom it believed was responsible for the drone incursion or what the perpetrator’s motivations were to carry out the operation.
“We take threats seriously and maintain robust measures at defense sites. This includes counter-drone security capabilities,” said Britain’s Ministry of Defense spokesperson.

Lakenheath is home to the 48th Fighter Wing, Mildenhall hosts the 100th Air Refueling Wing, and Feltwell is a hub for housing, schools, and other services.
The U.S. military previously reported an unidentified swarm of drones flying near Virginia’s Langley Air Force Base in December 2023.
