The driver accused of plowing his car through a crowd in Los Angeles on Saturday is a convicted felon who is out on parole, according to police.
Fernando Ramirez, a 29-year-old from San Clemente, has an extensive criminal history ranging from misdemeanors to felonies dating back over a decade. He has been involved in at least 11 criminal cases.

Ramirez was sentenced to two years in prison for a 2014 gang-related felony assault, followed by a six-year prison sentence in 2020 for a 2019 hate crime attack on a black man. Ramirez ran up behind the victim and punched him in the face, spewing derogatory terms targeting black people after his arrest, according to a press release from the Orange County District Attorney.
Ramirez’s more recent cases include a charge for felony domestic battery in 2022, a case that remains open, as well as a pending DUI case, according to Fox News.
His latest offense, which left more than 30 people injured, will likely prompt a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon, which could earn him up to four years in state prison and up to $10,000 in fines, according to Kann California Law Group.
The Los Angeles Police Department believes Ramirez was intoxicated at the time, but is also investigating the incident as an intentional act. Before the incident, Ramirez had reportedly been kicked out of the Vermont Hollywood nightclub for being disruptive, but that can’t be confirmed yet, said Jeff Lee, the public information officer for the LAPD.

“We heard a loud bang and we all started ducking, we think it’s gunshots,” one witness outside the club told CBS News. “We are in disbelief because 20 seconds more that would have been us.”
After driving through the crowd, Ramirez was pulled from his car, handcuffed, “beaten” by bystanders, and then shot in the back by someone who fled the scene afterward. Ramirez was taken to the hospital, and police are still searching for the suspected shooter as of Monday morning.
