After a New York jury found Donald Trump liable for both sexual abuse and defamation against E. Jean Carroll on Tuesday, both Democrats and Republicans expressed their thoughts on the verdict.

While the jury did not find the former president liable for rape, the jurors unanimously found Trump was responsible for a lesser degree of sexual assault and defamation. He was ordered to pay $5 million in damages to Carroll.

Most elected officials have yet to comment on the jury's decision publicly, but a few Democrats have denounced the former president, while Republicans have had a varying reaction to the matter.

"Donald Trump has been convicted of sexual assault. And Kevin McCarthy is all in with his sexually abusive pal," Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) said.

Sen. Ted Lieu (D-CA) echoed Swalwell's words, going so far as to call Trump a "monster."

"Today we learn, again, that Donald Trump is a monster. #trumpisguilty," he tweeted.

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel appeared dismissive of the charges when asked on Fox News in the immediate aftermath of the conviction, referring to Trump's earlier denials but saying she didn't want to "get ahead" of the former president. She added that the public was likely uninterested in the ruling, being more concerned with the southern border.

Embattled Rep. George Santos (R-NY), who was charged criminally Tuesday, took a more hostile approach to his party's favored 2024 nominee, calling the ruling "troubling."

“If he was found guilty of sexually assaulting anybody, my strong opinion is that that’s troubling, right. I don’t condone sexual assault or any nature of sexual assault against anybody,” he said.

Trump himself called the verdict a "disgrace" and a "witch hunt."

"I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHO THIS WOMAN IS. THIS VERDICT IS A DISGRACE - A CONTINUATION OF THE GREATEST WITCH HUNT OF ALL TIME!" he wrote on Truth Social.
