NextImg:Donald Trump indictment: Trump campaign denounces latest charges in comparison with Nazi Germany

The presidential campaign of former President Donald Trump denounced his indictment by a Washington, D.C., grand jury Tuesday, comparing it to the persecution suffered by political dissidents under Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.

On Tuesday, Trump was indicted on charges relating to the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol and alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. In response, his campaign reacted in a similar manner to the past two indictments, portraying Trump as a victim caught up in schemes from a weaponized Department of Justice.

BIDEN ADMINISTRATION INCANDESCENT LIGHTBULB BAN TAKES EFFECT

"This is nothing more than the latest corrupt chapter in the continued pathetic attempt by the Biden Crime Family and their weaponized Department of Justice to interfere with the 2024 Presidential Election, in which President Trump is the undisputed frontrunner, and leading by substantial margins," the statement from the campaign read.

It went on to decry the charges as "fake," saying they are meant to distract from the Hunter Biden scandal, and the statement said the indictment amounts to election interference.

"The lawlessness of these persecutions of President Trump and his supporters is reminiscent of Nazi Germany in the 1930s, the former Soviet Union, and other authoritarian, dictatorial regimes," the statement added. "President Trump has always followed the law and the Constitution, with advice from many highly accomplished attorneys."

The statement also took an optimistic turn, assuring supporters that Trump will beat the charges and emerge triumphant.

"These un-American witch hunts will fail and President Trump will be re-elected to the White House so he can save our Country from the abuse, incompetence, and corruption that is running through the veins of our Country at levels never seen before," it added.

A pro-Trump Super PAC, Make America Great Again Inc., released its own statement in support of the former president, saying the indictment was an effort to distract from the misdeeds of President Joe Biden and his family.

“Jack Smith is the enforcer for the Biden Crime Family," Karoline Leavitt, spokeswoman for Make America Great Again Inc., said. "The Bidens have made millions selling access to the Chinese Communist Party, Ukraine, and other foreign nations. Joe Biden has weaponized the Department of Justice to act as a shield to cover up his crimes, and a sword to target his leading political opponent with lies. The good news is — President Trump is undeterred and his unprecedented America First movement will carry him back to the White House, where he will dismantle the Deep State and bring the Biden Crime Family to justice.”

Tuesday's indictment is the latest in a saga Trump has faced since leaving office. His first indictment came in March, and it made him the first former president to be indicted.
