Special counsel Jack Smith looked over to former President Donald Trump during the arraignment of Trump in a federal courtroom in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.

Smith brought charges against Trump related to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election, after a grand jury in the nation's capital voted in favor of the charges.

Smith's brief glance toward Trump on Thursday came the second time the two appeared in a courtroom together, with the other instance being in a federal courthouse in Miami, Florida, after Trump was arraigned on charges related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents. In the classified documents case, Smith is also the lead prosecutor.

Trump pleaded not guilty to the four charges levied against him in the federal court in D.C. The charges against the former president included conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.

Trump's arraignment in Washington, D.C., on Thursday marks the third time this year that he has appeared before a court after being indicted. The former president's first arraignment was in Manhattan in April, after being indicted on charges related to the falsification of business records for alleged hush money payment, and the second arraignment was in Miami in June, after he was indicted on charges related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents.

The former president is widely expected to be indicted in Fulton County, Georgia in the coming weeks on different charges related to alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Trump lost the 2020 election, and the state of Georgia, to now-President Joe Biden.
