Former President Donald Trump was indicted for a third time on Wednesday and charged with a range of crimes related to an effort to overturn the 2020 election. Trump has also been charged in two other cases this year for the illegal retention of classified documents and another for business fraud.

Here is everything you need to know about the judges presiding over Trump's three separate cases.

DONALD TRUMP INDICTED: THREE TAKEAWAYS FROM FORMER PRESIDENT’S THIRD INDICTMENT

Judge Tanya Chutkan

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan has been assigned to preside over the criminal case of Trump after he was indicted Tuesday for conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Chutkan attended law school at the University of Pennsylvania and worked as a public defender in Washington, D.C., before former President Barack Obama nominated her to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in 2014. Chutkan was confirmed by a sweeping majority in the Senate in a 95-0 vote.

She is known for issuing harsher sentences to those convicted of crimes in the Capitol riots, occasionally stricter than Justice Department prosecutors recommend. The Associated Press reported that Chutkan has sentenced at least 38 people in Jan. 6 riot crimes, with all of the cases receiving prison terms of varying lengths.

In 2021, Chutkan ruled that White House records can be turned over to the House Jan. 6 investigative committee, which resulted in crucial phone logs and other documents in Trump’s investigation.

Trump is expected to be arraigned in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.

Judge Aileen Cannon

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon was assigned to Trump's classified documents case in June after special counsel Jack Smith initially issued 37 federal felony counts to the former president, but a superseding indictment added three more last week.

Born in Colombia, Cannon graduated from the University of Michigan Law School and clerked for conservative Judge Steven M. Colloton of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit in 2008. Cannon was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida in April 2020 by Trump.

Cannon gave Trump a favorable ruling last summer, approving his request to appoint a special master to review the documents seized by the FBI from his Florida estate. Her decision was later overruled by an appeals court.

She set the trial date, May 20, 2024, last week, a seeming compromise between a request from prosecutors to speed up the case to December and Trump’s attorney who has pushed to hold off, citing the effect the 2024 election has on the jury.

Judge Juan Merchan

Acting New York Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan will preside over Trump’s business fraud indictment from a Manhattan grand jury in March in relation to the former president's alleged role in a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels that dates back to the 2016 presidential election.

Born in Colombia, Merchan attended Hofstra University School of Law in New York and served as an assistant attorney general in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Merchan has presided over criminal cases at the New York County Supreme Court since 2009.

Merchan has experience presiding over criminal cases against Trump's company, overseeing a tax fraud trial of the Trump Organization last year.

He set a trial date of March 25 for the case after Trump’s attorneys sought to have the case moved to federal court. Trump has accused Merchan of hating him ahead of his day in court.
