Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) responded to former President Donald Trump's newest indictment in Georgia during a campaign appearance at the Iowa State Fair with Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) on Tuesday.

Responding to a question from NBC News reporter Ali Vitali, Scott remarked on the Georgia grand jury indictment, roughly 12 hours after it was handed down Monday evening.

His comments didn't deviate much from previous statements on Trump's legal troubles, with the senator saying, "We see the legal system being weaponized against political opponents." According to him, this is both "un-American and unacceptable."

"We need a better system than that and I, frankly, hopefully, will be the president of the United States where we have an opportunity to restore confidence and integrity in all of our Departments of Justice in the country," he said.

He was further prompted about Trump's 2021 phone conversation with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, during which he said, "All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have because we won the state." Raffensperger maintained that Georgia's election was accurate.

Scott said he had listened to the call but didn't draw the same conclusions as the reporter. "Yes, but we've just drawn different conclusions," he told her.

His campaign did not elaborate when asked by the Washington Examiner.

Prominent candidates such as Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), former Vice President Mike Pence, and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley did not provide comments to the Washington Examiner at the time of the indictment.

Vivek Ramaswamy, however, responded preemptively to the indictment on X, formerly known as Twitter, and further slammed it during a NewsNation town hall on Monday. "The reality is this — these are politicized persecutions through prosecution," he said. "And I say this as somebody who's running in some polls third, and some polls, like today's, second. It would be a lot easier for me if Donald Trump were not in this primary. But that is not how I want to win this election."

Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who is only polling around 1% nationally, also responded to the news promptly. "Donald Trump has disqualified himself from ever holding our nation’s highest office again," he posted on X.

"Regardless of the specifics of the Georgia indictment, I expect the voters will make the ultimate decision on the future of our democracy," he added.
