Former President Donald Trump left his arraignment hearing in Washington, D.C., feeling at least slightly frustrated in part because the judge presiding over his arrest referred to him as "Mr. Trump," multiple court watchers speculated.

Online media commentators immediately picked up on the U.S. Magistrate Judge Moxila Upadhyaya's choice of words after she opted not to refer to Trump as "President Trump."

"Every other president would have been addressed as 'President' not 'Mr.' … Let’s be real," the Daily Caller's chief national correspondent Henry Rodgers posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

The tension over the former president's title was also apparent because his attorney, John Lauro, used "President Trump" when referring to his client.

Before the brief 27-minute hearing ended, Trump pleaded not guilty to four criminal charges stemming from an alleged plot to overthrow the 2020 election. It marked the third time this year that Trump was arraigned on criminal charges and also represented the first time that special counsel Jack Smith's team of lawyers aiding the case were made visible to the public.

Not only did Upadhyaya have multiple family members in attendance for the court hearing, but several federal judges who serve in the federal district court were present, including Chief District Judge James Boasberg, District Judge Amy Berman Jackson, and District Judge Randy Moss. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who will preside over the remainder of Trump's case, was not present.

The former president was reportedly "pissed off" while on his way back from the courthouse to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, sources told CNN.

“I am told that the former president, one thing that irked him particularly, was during that hearing today that lasted about 27 minutes, was when the magistrate judge referred to him as simply ‘Mr. Trump,’” CNN's Kaitlan Collins said.

After arriving at the airport to depart back to New Jersey, Trump said, "When you look at what’s happening, this is a persecution of a political opponent." The former president has remained far and above the top candidate for likely Republican voters in primary polls since his first indictment in New York on 34 felony charges over an alleged hush money payment scheme.

Later in the evening, Trump posted to his Truth Social platform saying that he had a "very good day."

“CONSIDERING THE FACT THAT I HAD TO FLY TO A FILTHY, DIRTY, FALLING APART, & VERY UNSAFE WASHINGTON, D.C., TODAY, & THAT I WAS THEN ARRESTED BY MY POLITICAL OPPONENT, WHO IS LOSING BADLY TO ME IN THE POLLS, CROOKED JOE BIDEN, IT WAS A VERY GOOD DAY!"
