Former President Donald Trump doubled down on claims of a "rigged" 2020 election after he was booked in the Fulton County jail on a sweeping racketeering indictment, saying "I did nothing wrong and everybody knows it."

"What has taken place here is a travesty of justice. We did nothing wrong. I did nothing wrong, and everybody knows it," Trump told a group of reporters who gathered for a brief media conference in front of his signature Trump Force One jet at the Atlanta airport.

The former president called it a "really sad day for America" and set his arrest, and the three indictments that came before it, "should never happen."

Trump reaffirmed his belief that the 2020 election was stolen from him, saying he should "have the right" to challenge it and not be punished for doing so.

"There's never been anything like it in our country before. This is their way of campaigning. This is their one instance and you have three other instances," he added.

The former president faces 13 charges and paid a $200,000 bond for his release. He surrendered on Thursday, then was released shortly after about 20 minutes. A mugshot was taken of him inside the jail, the Fulton County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

Trump will remain on bail so long as his bond conditions aren't violated, which includes not using social media to send threats to individuals involved in the case, including prosecutors.
