Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) defended the legal process as former President Donald Trump was arraigned on Tuesday in lower Manhattan, urging the public to remain peaceful amid reports of scuffles between Trump supporters and protesters.

“I believe that Mr. Trump will have a fair trial that follows the facts and the law,” Schumer said in a statement. “There’s no place in our justice system for any outside influence or intimidation in the legal process. As the trial proceeds, protest is an American right but all protests must be peaceful.”

Tempers flared outside the court as a skirmish between pro-Trump and anti-Trump protesters began after a woman in a red "MAGA" hat reportedly tried to tear a large banner. Police later appeared to separate the two sides with a gap enforced through fencing seemingly as a way to prevent more confrontations.
