Donald Trump arrest: Marjorie Taylor Greene likens indictment to arrests of Jesus and Nelson Mandela

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) invoked the arrests of Jesus and Nelson Mandela while railing against the indictment of former President Donald Trump.
"President Trump is joining some of the most incredible people in history being arrested today. Nelson Mandela was arrested, served time in prison," Greene said in an interview Tuesday. "Jesus was arrested and murdered by the Roman government."

Trump was hit with a grand jury indictment vote last week and was slated for a court arraignment Tuesday. There are reportedly over 30 counts lodged against him, believed to pertain to a $130,000 hush-money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election cycle.
Jesus, who will be celebrated by Christians on Easter Sunday, was arrested and turned over to the Romans amid fears that he posed a threat to the empire. Mandela was hit with a life sentence for charges related to alleged sabotage as he led anti-apartheid efforts in South Africa. He was later released and became the president of the country after the end of apartheid.
"There have been many people throughout history that had been arrested and persecuted by radical, corrupt governments. And it's beginning today in New York City. And I just can't believe it's happening, but I'll always support him. He's done nothing wrong," the congresswoman said.
A stalwart supporter of Trump and a key ally in Congress, Greene briefly attended a protest in New York City and railed against the indictment.
Although the charges remain sealed, multiple reports indicate that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is seeking to pair a misdemeanor charge for falsifying records of the reimbursement scheme for the payment to Daniels with a campaign finance violation.

Trump has heartily denied wrongdoing and excoriated the Manhattan case as a "witch hunt." He is the first sitting or former U.S. president to be hit with criminal charges. President Ulysses Grant was arrested after speeding, but he was not indicted.
Following his appearance in court, Trump is expected to head back to Mar-a-Lago in Florida and deliver a speech.
