The Department of Labor fined Dollar Tree $254,478 following a workplace safety inspection at a Texas location.

Inspectors had visited the Mount Pleasant, Texas, store in September and discovered that the location's exits and walkways were blocked by merchandise, according to a report.

Boxes were "high enough to fall on workers," according to the inspection.

Service rooms, storerooms, and passageways were also found to be unclean and in a state of disorder, the report noted.

"In the event of an emergency, workers and others must have fast and safe access to unblocked exit routes," OSHA Regional Administrator Eric S. Harbin said.

"Retailers like Dollar Tree that fail to make sure their stores' storage areas are organized and safe are endangering everyone who works and shops there."

Starting in 2017, Dollar Tree demonstrated a "pattern of disregard" regarding worker safety, according to the Labor Department.

More than 300 violations have been uncovered in over 500 inspections of Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores, according to the report.

Dollar Tree Inc. will have 15 business days to pay the fine, contest the punishment, or address the problem with OSHA.
