The Department of Justice announced Tuesday that it had resolved a Title IX investigation into the Greek life culture at Case Western Reserve University, drawing a two-year inquiry to a close.

The department's Civil Rights division had concluded that the Cleveland, Ohio-based university had failed to adequately respond to "a well-known climate of sexual harassment in its Greek life program" and is requiring the school to implement a number of reforms, including funding several student service centers, and implementing annual training for staff and students.

“The U.S. Attorney’s Office takes sex discrimination allegations such as these very seriously. The agreement provides not only for increased training but also for revised policies and procedures along with increased efforts at campus engagement and internal monitoring to address such matters proactively,” U.S. Attorney Rebecca Lutzko for the Northern District of Ohio said in a statement. “This settlement sends a strong message that sexual harassment on college campuses will not be tolerated, and the measures in the agreement will help protect current and future students."

The investigation reportedly focused on the university's response to a number of social media posts that had alleged a climate of sexual harassment on campus and in the school's fraternities and sororities. The investigation concluded that the university "did not respond appropriately" to the complaints and that university staff did not properly report incidents of sexual harassment to the proper university office.

In a statement, Case Western Reserve University said it had voluntarily entered into the agreement with the DOJ to resolve the investigation in order to "help reassure stakeholders of our continuous focus on the safety and well-being of our students."

The university noted that it has retained the Jones Day law firm to conduct an assessment of the school's Title IX compliance and processes and that the institution had "identified additional ways to enhance our Title IX processes."

"We recognize that these actions do not alleviate the experiences that some members of our CWRU family have had while on campus," the university said. "To those impacted, we are committed to fostering trust by further enhancing our resources to provide a vibrant and safe campus experience for all."
