The shiba inu Kabosu, the dog behind a viral meme and the dogecoin logo, died Friday.

Kabosu’s owner Atsuko Sato, 62, announced on her blog that the dog died peacefully in her sleep. Sato adopted Kabosu in 2008 and did not know her exact age at the time, but she estimates Kabosu was about 18 years old.

The dog’s side-eyed glance was captured in a photo by Sato, which she posted to her blog in 2010. It eventually spread online as a meme to express amazement, titled the “doge meme.” By 2013, two bitcoin founders titled their cryptocurrency “dogecoin” and made Kabosu’s face their logo.

“Today Kabosu, our community’s shared friend and inspiration, peacefully passed in the arms of her person,” Dogecoin wrote on X. “The impact this one dog has made across the world is immeasurable. She was a being who knew only happiness and limitless love. Please keep her spirit and her family in your heart, and most importantly carry her with you as your story continues – we are all fortunate for hers to have touched and shaped ours.”

“Rest in peace, dear Kabosu, beloved Doge,” the cryptocurrency’s foundation wrote. “You were very much wow.”

A bronze statue of Kabosu was erected in Sakura, Japan, earlier this year. Its plaque reads, “On November 2nd, 2008, she joined the family of Atsuko Sato. It was decided that this should be Kabosu’s third birthday. Then on February 13th, 2010, Kabosu graced the Internet, becoming the world’s most beloved meme. She is wholesome, calm, and accepting, inspiring her devotees to ‘Do Only Good Everyday.'”

Kabosu’s non-fungible token sold in 2021 for $4 million. Her cryptocurrency is among the top 10 most valuable on the market, going for 16 cents per coin.
