The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau appears to be the next federal agency on Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency’s list to overhaul.

Musk has led DOGE in investigating a slew of sprawling bureaucracies in Washington, D.C., for government waste and corruption since the Trump administration assumed power last month, including the United States Agency for International Development and the Departments of Treasury and Defense

Now, the Trump administration appears to be setting itself up to scrutinize the CFPB’s practices.

The CFPB protects consumers by analyzing the practices of large financial institutions like banks, lenders, credit unions, and debt collectors to ensure they are not improperly targeting consumers.

Several DOGE employees entered the CFPB’s Washington headquarters on Friday to conduct a review of the agency, per multiple reports, with the move coming the same day Musk attracted attention for writing “CFPB RIP” accompanied by a gravestone emoji in a social media post. DOGE personnel appear to have read-only access to records and are primarily scrutinizing the agency to ensure it is complying with President Donald Trump’s executive orders, including directives pausing regulatory activity and ending diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at federal agencies.

Three Musk allies, among them DOGE personnel, have set up an office at the CFPB, per a Politico report. The bureau’s homepage is no longer working, with an error code popping up for users trying to access the website.

A few hours after they began their review, Musk posted on X, “CFPB RIP.” This isn’t the first time he’s espoused the idea of shutting down the agency; in December, he posted, “Delete CFPB,” after a rule came down regulating how payment systems work with technology firms.

In another shake-up for the CFPB, Russell Vought, the White House’s newly confirmed at the Office of Management and Budget, is also reportedly acting leader of the CFPB, replacing Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as the agency’s head. As he started his own internal review of the bureau, Bessent halted much of the CFPB’s work on Monday, ordering the employees to cease crafting regulations, enforcing rules, or conducting inquiries.

The Washington Examiner reached out to the CFPB for comment but did not receive a response.

Musk called for the elimination of the CFPB last November, arguing it was a “duplicative” federal agency.

His stance comes as Republicans and many in the banking sector have long characterized the agency as an out-of-control bureaucracy that issues stringent, unnecessary, and politicized regulations. One of the  key contentions against the CFPB lies on the grounds that the bureau receives all of its funding from the Federal Reserve, leading to criticism it has bypassed “Congress’s power of the purse.”

Last month, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rep. Keith Self (R-TX) introduced legislation to eliminate the CFBP, calling it an “unaccountable and burdensome agency that has stifled economic growth through regulatory overreach.”
