NextImg:DNC picks Shasti Conrad as second vice chair after David Hogg debacle

The Democratic National Committee elected Shasti Conrad for the second vice chair position left open after the organization opted to hold new races for the position, amid anger over David Hogg‘s decision to meddle in primaries.

Conrad, also the Washington State Democratic Party Chair, joins Malcolm Kenyatta, who was reelected as vice chair on Saturday. She won nearly 56% of the vote, defeating Kalyn Free, who won nearly 44% of the vote, in a runoff election.

Conrad pulled nearly 44% of the vote while Free won roughly 37% of the vote, and Jeanna Repass received nearly 20% of the vote during the first vote earlier this week, where no candidate won a majority of the vote.

“I’m honored to serve as Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee and am deeply grateful to the members who placed their trust in me,” said Conrad in a statement. “This was the longest election in DNC history, and every vote cast reflected our shared belief in building a stronger, more inclusive Democratic Party. As a millennial, I’m committed to creating more opportunities for young people to get involved and become the leaders of today—not just tomorrow.”

Before winning the vice chair position, Conrad was the first woman of color and the youngest person to serve as chair of the Washington State Democratic Party.

RANDI WEINGARTEN AND LEE SAUNDERS QUIT THE DNC IN LATEST UPHEAVAL

Free’s decision to challenge the vice chair elections held in February kicked off a dramatic process that led to the DNC voting to rehold the election and Hogg ultimately deciding not to run for reelection. Free alleged in a complaint to the DNC that the elections were improperly held, allowing male candidates for vice chair the upper hand.

“To Kalyn Free—I want to say thank you. You put your heart and soul into the effort to right a procedural wrong. You stood firm in your values. You organized. You inspired. And you reminded us all what conviction looks like,” Conrad added.

Democrats were largely divided over Hogg’s group, Leaders We Deserve, announcing a $20 million effort to primary ineffective elder Democrats in favor of younger, more aggressive Democrats.

The DNC also faced more internal turmoil when two labor union members, Randi Weingarten and Lee Saunders, announced their resignations as members, citing disagreements with chairman Ken Martin’s leadership.
