The Department of Homeland Security is racing to expand security at all U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities nationwide following recent attacks against personnel, including a mass shooting on Wednesday.
A DHS spokeswoman said the federal department will not tolerate targeted violence against its law enforcement personnel and has begun to put a plan into place to beef up security at and around ICE field offices and detention sites from coast to coast.

“In light of the horrific shooting that was motivated by hatred for ICE and the other unprecedented acts of violence against ICE law enforcement, including bomb threats, cars being used a weapons, rocks and Molotov cocktails thrown at officers, and doxing online of officers’ families, DHS will immediately begin increasing security at ICE facilities across the country,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin wrote in a statement to the Washington Examiner.
The DHS did not disclose whether it will hire private security, rely on local police, or bring in federal police from other agencies to supplement existing security at ICE facilities.
Nationwide, ICE has 122 detention facilities that it uses to hold illegal immigrants who are in custody and going through deportation proceedings in court. ICE has an additional 159 offices across the country.
A sniper-style shooting in Dallas early Wednesday injured two detainees and killed one detainee while they were being escorted into ICE’s field office from an attached garage.
The alleged shooter was identified by police as Joshua Jahn. The shooter is believed by the FBI to have targeted ICE, though it is unclear why he shot detainees and not law enforcement. Jahn killed himself after carrying out the shooting.
Police on scene on Wednesday found rounds on the ground near his body, including one that had “ANTI ICE” written on the side of it.
In the wake of the attack, ICE and DHS officials have noted that this was not a one-off. ICE has been targeted a number of times this year as it has carried out President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigrants.
ICE is the federal agency responsible for enforcing immigration laws within the United States, whereas the federal agency U.S. Customs and Border Protection is tasked with inspecting people, goods, and vehicles at the land, air, and sea borders.

McLaughlin said assaults aimed at ICE officers, in particular, are up 1,000% under Trump as a result of comments that some lawmakers and pundits have made.
“Comparing ICE day-in and day-out to the Nazi Gestapo, the Secret Police, and slave patrols has consequences,” McLaughlin said. “The men and women of ICE are fathers and mothers, sons and daughters. They get up every morning to try and make our communities safer. Like everyone else, we just want to go home to our families at night. The violence and dehumanization of these men and women who are simply enforcing the law must stop.”
