The Department of Homeland Security published a list of more than 500 “sanctuary jurisdictions” across the country that it says are obstructing federal immigration enforcement, in line with President Donald Trump’s mass deportation agenda.
Each jurisdiction will receive a notice stating that the government considers it noncompliant with immigration law and may be violating federal criminal statutes, according to the department. The list was published on the DHS website.

“These sanctuary city politicians are endangering Americans and our law enforcement in order to protect violent criminal illegal aliens,” Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said in a press release.
The list was compiled based on several criteria, including whether the cities or localities declared themselves to be a sanctuary jurisdiction, their level of cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, limitations on sharing information with immigration authorities, or if they’ve had any legal protections for illegal immigrants.
The move follows Trump’s April 28 executive order requiring the secretary of Homeland Security and the attorney general to publish a list of states and jurisdictions that violate federal immigration laws. The list will be regularly updated.
Federal departments and agencies, working with the Office of Management and Budget, will be tasked with identifying federal grants or contracts given to identified sanctuary jurisdictions, and suspend or terminate the money, according to the order.
If a jurisdiction continues to “remain in defiance,” the Trump administration said the attorney general and secretary of Homeland Security have the authority to pursue any “legal remedies and enforcement measures” they deem necessary.
In the Washington, D.C., area, 12 jurisdictions were included on the list.
Mayor Muriel Bowser released her latest budget proposal Tuesday, which included a request to repeal a law banning police from assisting federal immigration authorities in carrying out deportations.
“We are happy to work with the council to make sure provisions that were reflected there are raised up,” Bowser said.
If Bowser’s proposal is approved, district police would be given the authority to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal agencies to target illegal immigrants.

ICE has about 6,000 agents who are able to find, arrest, and remove illegal immigrants. With the help of local law enforcement, Trump’s mass deportation agenda can be carried out faster.
The Trump administration has already taken steps targeting areas that are noncompliant with ICE, and has met with pushback in the courts. One executive order issued by Trump directs the attorney general and the Homeland Security secretary to withhold federal money from sanctuary jurisdictions. Another directs federal agencies to ensure that payments to state and local governments do not “abet so-called ‘sanctuary’ polices that seek to shield illegal aliens from deportation.”
