The Biden administration will take aggressive action in the coming months to secure the United States from attacks waged by the People’s Republic of China and surge homeland security resources to assess national vulnerabilities.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Friday announced sweeping action as part of a 90-day departmentwide "sprint " to look ahead and determine every way that China could harm U.S. interests here and abroad, as well as how to counterattack.
“The People's Republic of China poses an especially grave threat to the homeland, one that indeed does touch all of our department’s missions,” Mayorkas said in a State of the Homeland address at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington Friday morning. “Beijing has the capability and the intent to undermine our interests at home and abroad, and is leveraging every instrument of its national power to do so.”
The threat from China was not limited to its government but also included Chinese-owned and operated infrastructure, as well as how Beijing could manipulate or take down U.S. infrastructure systems.
One area the DHS will examine is how the U.S. is able to defend critical infrastructure, such as the electric grid, from Chinese attacks. Mayorkas voiced concern for China’s potential ability to sow discord and panic among Americans through social media.
“Another area of assessment will involve how we can bolster our screening and vetting to identify illicit travelers from the PRC, who exploit our lawful immigration and travel systems to collect intelligence, steal intellectual property, and harass dissidents,” Mayorkas said.
DHS agency U.S. Customs and Border Protection is responsible for screening all people and vehicles attempting to enter the country at air, sea, and land ports of entry. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is another DHS agency that plays a role in immigration processing and who may be admitted.
