Elon Musk long supported Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) before his role on Wednesday evening assisting with DeSantis's presidential run.

DeSantis will announce his 2024 presidential run on Wednesday at a Twitter Spaces event hosted by Musk and moderated by venture capitalist David Sacks — an unconventional launch. In doing so, he has allied himself closely with Musk through his reliance on his platform. The decision signals not only Twitter's new commitment to hosting conservative content but Musk's intent to support DeSantis in the presidential race.

Musk has said multiple times that he preferred to support DeSantis over Trump in the 2024 elections. Musk said in 2022 that his preference for 2024 would be “someone sensible and centrist. I had hoped that would the case for the Biden administration, but have been disappointed so far.”

It's unclear how long that interest in DeSantis will linger. Musk signaled approval for Sen. Tim Scott's (R-SC) first presidential ad on Friday. While Musk did not directly say he would vote for Scott, the billionaire did say that he would "love to see [Scott] and DeSantis as the GOP ticket. We could finally get back to traditional, family-value conservatives."

Musk's fortunes are tied to Florida thanks to SpaceX's presence in the state. Two out of four of SpaceX's facilities operate in Florida, including a five-year lease of Cape Canaveral. The company has also made efforts to move more of its operations out of California to Florida, including the shifting of Starship testing to the state. Florida has also passed legislation that would protect Musk from being held liable if space debris hit a state resident.

DeSantis filed paperwork on Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission, confirming that he is indeed running in 2024.

Twitter has slowly evolved into a conservative-friendly platform. Tucker Carlson and the Daily Wire have both announced they intend to release content on the platform.

Former President Donald Trump does not plan to join DeSantis on Twitter, it appears. The former president seems intent on posting to his platform, Truth Social, instead of taking over his old Twitter account. His account was reinstated in December, but Trump has not tweeted from it since.
