If Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) announces his presidential campaign on Wednesday night as expected, he will be the first 2024 GOP candidate to do so on Twitter.

DeSantis is set to join Twitter Spaces with Elon Musk and DeSantis backer David Sacks. It's an unconventional approach, highlighting the Musk era of the social media platform and the perception the site is now more favorable to the Right.

But that doesn't mean there won't be criticism. Almost immediately after news of DeSantis launching a campaign on Twitter broke, former President Donald Trump and his allies denigrated the approach.

"This is one of the most out-of-touch campaign launches in modern history. The only thing less relatable than a niche campaign launch on Twitter, is DeSantis' after party at the uber elite Four Seasons resort in Miami," said Karoline Leavitt, spokeswoman for the pro-Trump super PAC Make America Great Again Inc., in a statement.

Other Trump allies also hit DeSantis for using the social media platform, to which the former president hasn't yet returned since being reinstated after a ban.

“Announcing on Twitter is perfect for Ron DeSantis. This way, he doesn’t have to interact with people, and the media can’t ask him any questions," a Trump adviser told the Washington Examiner.

Vanity Fair responded to the news with a story that compared Musk to David Duke in the headline, prompting Christina Pushaw, a DeSantis spokeswoman, to respond, "They’re losing their position as gatekeepers … and they can’t handle it."

DeSantis's decision to announce on Twitter is seen as a way to sideline established traditional media outlets, with which the governor has famously battled. Musk has made overtures toward conservatives such as Tucker Carlson after his Fox News ouster, and his purchase of the site elicited praise on the Right. Following the Twitter announcement, DeSantis will speak with former Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) on Fox News at 8 p.m. ET for his first TV interview as a presidential candidate.

In contrast, after Trump gave a prime-time interview with Carlson following his historic indictment stemming from a 2016 hush money payment scheme to porn actress Stormy Daniels, he also participated in a live CNN town hall event after years of antagonizing the network.

Former Republican Rep. David Jolly (FL), now a member of the Forward Party, called DeSantis's Twitter decision "a serious miscalculation" and a "Dumb move." Jolly said there were three missteps for DeSantis announcing on Twitter: "1. He's leaning into the 'weird'. 2. He's doubling down on being the candidate who needs a safe space. 3. He's promoting his association with regressive ideology."

But DeSantis needs to win over GOP primary voters before he can turn into the general, and that will require winning over conservatives who have stuck with Trump.

With Trump posting on his social media platform Truth Social over Twitter, it gives DeSantis space to own Twitter similarly to how Trump did from 2016 through 2020.
